H20 - 16 Tons per Axle
HS-20 Rated Cattle Guards are rated at 16 tons per axle and meet the demanding specifications needed for State and Federal requirements such as DOT, BLM, USFS, NP, and US Military installations. They are the minimum rating used for public roadways by the government. They are also the cattle guard of choice for residential usage where city, county, or state regulations require the HS-20 rating.
These guards also have optional end wings with posts and clean-out lines built into the guard for easy cleaning of debris. With the flat top-pipe design, they provide a smoother crossing for vehicles than the round pipe grids while still creating an effective livestock barrier without the need for a gate!

Note that the guards come with pre-drilled holes for mounting end-to-end for wider roadways. If you need highway-rated or other types, please see our entire cattle guard selection here.

Cattle Guards: Superior Livestock Control
Barn World is dedicated to providing efficient solutions for livestock control, and one of our most popular methods is to exchange farm gates for cattle guards! Explore a variety of cattle containment options without the hassle of opening and closing gates at BarnWorld.com.
Cattle guards offer an unparalleled advantage over traditional gates. Designed to prevent livestock from entering areas where vehicles travel, they replace conventional gates, allowing vehicles to pass without the need for manual opening and closing. This eliminates the hassle associated with every passage through the fenced area. It also eliminates the worry of an occasional gate that's been left open.
Hoofed animals find cattle guards unappealing due to the unsuitable footing they provide, effectively deterring them from attempting to cross the barrier. The availability of different sizes and load ratings ensures suitability for various applications, meeting the guidelines set by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
Many state and federal agencies mandate specific load ratings for different uses, and Barn World offers a comprehensive range of load-carrying options to meet these requirements. Discover the efficiency and reliability of our cattle guards for your livestock control needs!
For those considering permanent footing installations, the recommended foundation is a full concrete vault with 6" walls. In areas where concrete pouring is impractical, we also carry pre-cast concrete foundations that can be shipped right with the guard to your site.
Hinged Clean-Out Option
The hinged clean-out section on a cattle guard is a feature designed to make the process of cleaning the space beneath the guard more convenient. Here's how it works and why it makes cleaning easier:
What It Is:
Hinged Clean-Out Section: This is a liftable, hinged section of the cattle guard that can be easily opened or hinged up. It is built directly into the top of the guard to provide easy access to the vaulted area below for cleaning.
How It Makes Cleaning Easier:
- Access to Debris: Over time, dirt, mud, leaves, and other debris can accumulate under a cattle guard, potentially reducing its effectiveness by filling the gaps that deter livestock from crossing. The hinged clean-out section allows easy access to this area without needing to remove the entire cattle guard.
- Ease of Use: With a hinged section, you can simply open it to remove debris, rather than disassembling or lifting the entire guard, which would be much more labor-intensive and time-consuming.
- Maintaining Effectiveness: Regularly cleaning under the cattle guard is essential to ensure it remains effective at preventing livestock from crossing. The hinged clean-out section facilitates this maintenance, ensuring the gaps remain clear and the cattle guard continues to function as intended.
- Safety: Cleaning the area under a cattle guard can be hazardous if done improperly, especially if you need to lift heavy sections of the guard. A hinged section reduces the need for heavy lifting, minimizing the risk of injury.
This optional feature is a simple, safe, and practical means of keeping the vaulted area beneath the guard clear of debris without having to remove the entire cattle crossing.
