Common Uses

Ranch & Farm Entrances: Eliminate gate cycling at high-traffic points while still keeping livestock secure.

Pasture Crossings: Facilitate seamless access between grazing areas and support heavy agricultural vehicles.

Driveway & Road Access: Ideal for private driveways and farm roads where livestock containment meets convenience. The cattle guard deters cattle without interfering with trucks, tractors, or trailers crossing the entrance.

Livestock Control Points: Most effective when livestock containment, safety, and traffic flow are all top priorities. Mesh panel construction improves visibility and reduces the risk of injury compared to barrel gates.

Wire Gate Video Review from Hi-Qual

Below is a great video presentation of the wire-filled gate from HiQual.

HiQual manufactures a complete line of gates that fits all applications in the market. We start out with the combo gate, then offer the general-duty gate, the heavy-duty gate, the cattleman's gate, and finally the large super six gate. All of the HiQual gates have several things in common. We'll start with the combo and talk about some of those things.

Quality Construction All of our material is 1017 steel that we special order from our raw material from our suppliers. We specify that it has to be 1017 steel. The 1017 number refers to the amount of carbon that goes into the raw material and it's like making chocolate chip cookies if you will. Our competition put half a cup of chocolate chips and that's the normal steel that is used in the industry. It's referred to as 1010 and has a failure from a strike at 48,000 PSI. We special order 1017 so we get a full cup of chocolate chips. Ours have a high carbon content in our raw material giving us 58,000 PSI. What that means is the pressure must reach 58,000 pounds per square inch before the steel will fail! So ultimately, it sounds redundant, but we use stronger steel to make our gates and panels each year.

Our gates have square corners to keep them balanced. Why square corners? There are two big reasons: One is for safety because we don't want to create a dangerous choke or trap point at a connection between two panels or between a gate and the post it's hung on. Square corners are better because you're putting up a gate or a panel to create a barrier and ultimately, that barrier's going to get challenged some time. And if cattle, horses or livestock, or whatever you have been trying to go over or through that barrier, there's a good chance they can end up on top. The last thing we want to do is create the Valley of Death here so safety is foremost at HiQual and that's why square corners.

Another reason our gates are far superior is if you look at the competitors, they will take the frame of their gate or their panel and it starts out as one piece. It's put to the press and it's been conformed into the shape that they want. When that straight pipe is bent into a corner shape, it is pressed and that material on the outside of the corner is stretched. It may start out as 16 gauge, 20 gauge, or even 14 gauge, but once it's stretched, it becomes thinner and that becomes a weak point. That becomes the weak link and that's why is not a balanced product.

The other thing the HiQual does that our competitors don't do is create our completely welded, not tack welded, notched, and vertical support between our horizontal braces, or horizontal rails. What this does is give the product superior horizontal strength, again once that product is tested, either vertically or horizontally, the vertical welded support is going to give it much more strength and durability that our competition. Our competition likes to use the z-bar or even a lighter piece of material that's just tack welded and all that's doing is maintaining the spacing between the horizontal rails and giving that gator panel no additional strength.

So those are the things that are common in all the gates and panels.

Let's talk about specific gates and will start with the combo gate. The Combo Gate is 48 inches with a 2 x 4" mesh in the bottom come and comes standard with the 11 1/4 inch long by 3/4" diameter threaded hinges. Why threaded hinges? It's to give you the ability to adjust the gate to fit the opening. I don't care how good you are at hanging your gate, once you set a post and hang a gate on it, that post is going to shift over time. If you have a fixed, gate latch, you lack the ability to adjust that gate and it won't fit that opening anymore. As the post settles over time, I can come back and adjust my gate to fit in the opening both horizontally and vertically.

We use a true quarter-inch latch plate that is welded on both sides. That sounds trivial but if you look at the competition. it's not. Many people use lighter material with tack welded typically on one side, not both. So as pressure is applied to the gate, the gate fails at the latch plate and it's not a balanced product like HiQual is.

The Combo Gates comes with a 34" x 3/16" chain latch that securely latches the gate with the heavy-duty quarter-inch latch plate.

Quality from top to bottom, the Combo Gate is built for years of trouble-free abuse!
