Cattle Guard Wings for Secure Livestock Containment

Each wing includes a convenient bolt bag hardware kit for easy attachment to your cattle guard ends.

Description

Prevent livestock from bypassing your fence line where it meets the cattle guard by installing durable cattle guard wings. These wings form a reliable two-piece barrier consisting of a post and a triangular wing section, designed to block animals from walking around the edges and escaping your pasture.

Specifically engineered to mount seamlessly to flat top rail cattle guards, the wings feature built-in mounting tabs that bolt securely to the ends of your cattle guard, ensuring a sturdy and effective livestock barrier.

The cattle guard wing measures 80 inches wide at the base and stands 74-1/2 inches tall when positioned vertically. Note that the wing is sold separately from the cattle guard wing post, which must be purchased individually to complete your installation.

Constructed from heavy-duty 10-gauge A36 steel, each wing weighs approximately 56 pounds, with the wing-end hardware adding about 60 pounds. Installing a pair of these wings provides a secure livestock containment solution that effectively blocks access around fence-to-cattle guard junctions while allowing easy vehicle entry through your pasture.

What are Cattle Guard Wings

Cattle guard wings, also known as just wings or wing fences, are additional fencing structures that are installed on the sides of a cattle guard. They serve a crucial role in preventing livestock, particularly cattle, from attempting to walk around or bypass the cattle guard.

The primary purpose of cattle guards is to create an open gap in the road or fence line that allows vehicles to pass through without the need for gates while effectively deterring livestock from crossing. Cattle guards typically consist of a series of parallel bars or rails set into the ground, forming a grid-like pattern. These bars create an optical illusion for the animals, making it difficult and uncomfortable for them to walk across. While cattle guards are effective in preventing livestock from directly crossing over, determined or curious animals may attempt to navigate around them.

This is where cattle guard wings come into play. The wings are extensions of the cattle guard structure, extending horizontally from the sides. They act as a barrier, discouraging animals from attempting to step around the cattle guard. They are typically installed parallel to the road where the guard transitions from a horizontal barrier for the animals to a vertical one, known as the fence line. They form an additional obstacle that makes it challenging for livestock to walk around the junction of the last fence pole and the cattle guard itself.

Why Use Cattle Guard Wings?

Preventing the 'Step-Around'

Cattle guard wings help in closing off the sides of the cattle guard, eliminating the possibility of animals trying to step around the guard.

While cattle guards are highly effective in deterring animals from walking directly over them, adding wings further enhances the overall effectiveness of the livestock barrier.

Livestock Containment

  • Extended Barrier: Cattle guard wings extend the barrier created by the cattle guard itself, covering the gaps on either side that might otherwise allow livestock to bypass the guard.
  • Redirecting Livestock: The angled design of the wings guides livestock away from the sides of the cattle guard, reducing the risk of animals attempting to cross at the edges where they might find a way through.

Reduces Injury Risk

  • Smooth Transition: The wings create a smoother transition from the fenced area to the cattle guard, minimizing the chances of livestock injuring themselves on sharp fence edges or trying to jump over the barrier.
  • Safe Containment: By effectively containing livestock within designated areas, the wings help prevent animals from wandering onto roads or other hazardous areas where they might cause accidents or get injured.

Enhancing Fence Integrity

  • Structural Support: Cattle guard wings often provide additional structural support to the fence line, ensuring that the entire containment system remains sturdy and reliable.
  • Preventing Fence Damage: By deterring livestock from pushing against or attempting to break through weak points in the fence, the wings help maintain the integrity of the enclosure.

Ease of Installation

  • Compatibility: Cattle guard wings are designed to be compatible with various types of fencing, making them easy to integrate into existing containment systems without extensive modifications.
  • Cost-Effective Solution: Installing wings can be a cost-effective way to enhance the security of a livestock containment system, reducing the need for frequent repairs or upgrades to the fence.

By addressing these critical aspects, cattle guard wings play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of livestock, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and effective containment system.

Cattle guard wings are essential components of a comprehensive livestock roadway barrier system. They work in conjunction with cattle guards to join the fence line and create a reliable and secure barrier that not only prevents direct crossings but also discourages animals from attempting to find alternative routes around the guard. This contributes to the overall safety of the animals and crossing cars, and helps keep them safe and secure in a pasture.
