Rouen Duck — Heritage Heavyweight Waterfowl
The Rouen Duck is a stately, heritage waterfowl breed originating from France, named after the city of Rouen. These ducks are prized for their striking coloration, large size, and calm temperament — making them an excellent choice for homesteads, small farms, exhibition, or meat production.
Appearance & Color
Rouens closely resemble wild Mallards in color, but with a much more substantial build. The drakes feature a lustrous green head and neck, a rich purplish-brown chest, and steel-gray penciling on their upper body. The hens are mahogany brown with delicate penciling of greenish-black or deep brown.
Size & Weight
A key characteristic of Rouen ducks is their size: they are significantly heavier than Mallards, sometimes weighing in at three times as much. Mature males typically reach around 7 lb, while females weigh in at approximately 5 lb.
Temperament & Behavior
Rouens are known for their docile, calm personalities. Unlike many lighter duck breeds, they do not fly well, making them easier to manage in a pond or yard setting. Their large size and laid-back nature give them a majestic presence, but because they are slower-growing (maturing around 6–8 months), they may require a bit more patience.
Purpose & Uses
- Meat Production: Rouens are an excellent dual-purpose or meat bird thanks to their heavy body and flavorful meat.
- Exhibition: Their striking coloration and size make them a favorite in show rings.
- Backyard / Ornamental: Because of their calm disposition and beauty, Rouens are great for hobbyists looking for ornamental or pet ducks.
Care & Management
Given their weight and limited flying ability, Rouens benefit from a secure, predator-protected environment. Their heavy bodies can make them prone to foot problems like bumblefoot, so providing soft ground or bedding is important.
For feed, adhere to standard waterfowl nutritional guidelines: duck starter for the first several weeks, followed by a waterfowl grower diet, and transition to a waterfowl maintenance or layer pellet when mature.
Why Choose Rouen Ducks?
If you're looking for a breed that combines beauty, size, and versatility, the Rouen duck stands out. Their calm temperament, impressive appearance, and dual-purpose utility make them an ideal pick for backyard farms, show enthusiasts, or those raising ducks for meat or eggs.
