Heavy Duty Cattle Guard Rating

The U-80 rating is 30 tons per axle and is an extreme design built for large construction vehicles and extremely heavy-duty activities such as cement facilities that see a lot of heavy truck traffic, off-site BLM work, mining, and oil fields typically use these over-built crossings. Below are some pictures of the design and installations.

Cattle Guard wings

The wings bolt on the ends of the cattle guard and carry the barrier from the road up to the vertical fence line. This prevents the animals from stepping around the end fence post and bypassing the grid altogether.

Questions When Considering U-80 Rated Cattle Guards for Deer Control

1. Is a U-80-rated cattle guard effective for controlling deer?

Answer: While cattle guards are designed to support extremely heavy loads, their effectiveness, as with any cattle grid installation, in controlling deer can vary. Deer are more agile and can sometimes jump over or maneuver around cattle guards. We typically recommend a 12' or greater distance in the direction of vehicle travel to discourage deer from attempting to jump across. They can be very athletic and can jump much further than typical livestock.

To create more depth, two cattle guards may be installed side by side to create an effective barrier. The increased distance will discourage the animals from trying to jump across.

Please also be careful to consider that additional tall fencing may be necessary to keep them from jumping over a fence line.

2. What load capacity does the U-80 rating provide, and is it necessary for this project?

Answer: The U-80 rating provides a load capacity of 30 tons per axle, making it suitable for very heavy vehicles, such as those used in construction or industrial projects. If your project involves vehicles that exceed the load capacities of standard cattle guards, the U-80 rating ensures the durability and safety required for continuous heavy traffic.

3. How does the installation of a U-80-rated cattle guard impact the overall site safety, particularly concerning deer control?

Answer: These guards significantly enhance site safety by providing a robust barrier that can withstand the weight of heavy trucks without compromising its structure. At the same time, they can prevent livestock and deer from becoming a hazard to heavy truck traffic. Due to the athletic ability of deer, the guard should be part of a broader strategy that includes taller fencing or other barriers to prevent deer from jumping over the fencing to bypass the guard.
