Heavy-duty Cattle Grid Specifications
For extremely heavy equipment, this eight-foot-long (across-the-road) cattle guard has a U-54 rating that allows it to carry an impressive 25 tons per axle. Cattle grids rated at this extreme load-carrying capacity are overbuilt for use on public roadways and are usually used for off-highway work such as oil fields or logging operations. It's available with wings, foundations, and hinged clean-out sections as well.

Pictures of the Cattle Grids
The top view of the cattle guard shows the parallel rails running across the road with the I and C channels supporting underneath. This typical design is the industry standard and the U-54 is over-engineered to carry 25 tons/axle.

Cattle Grid Footings
These precast concrete foundations can ship with the steel grids at a very economical rate. Although they do weigh a lot, they can ship on the same trailer as the guards for fairly economical rates. When they arrive on site, they are simply lowered into place, back-filled, and are set for installation. The grid itself is designed to fit directly on the anchor bolts already in the footings so it can be bolted down to prevent any kind of movement. It creates a solid crossing for all types of vehicles.

Wings for Cattle Grids
A smart cow will figure out that they can just 'step around' the fence post where it meets up with the grid and bypass the barrier altogether. The wings are designed to allow the fence line to attach to the guard so livestock can't just step around. Below is a picture of the wings in action.

Cattle Guard Wing Detail
The wing is a two-piece fence-line to cattle guard connection. The wing is a steel, powder-coated triangular piece that is held up and in place by the post. The fence can then be attached directly to the post to complete the connection as shown below:
